Matt Gaetz’s wife posts cryptic tribute as he withdraws from AG consideration: ‘End of an era’

Ginger Gaetz called it “the end of an era” after her husband Matt withdrew his name to become Donald Trump’s next attorney general.

In the moments after making his announcement, the 30-year-old “wife” of the former Florida congressman posted a photo of the couple walking on the steps of the Capitol on Instagram and wrote, “The end of an era.” No one loves America more than this man.”

It’s not yet clear whether the puzzling “end of an era” comment refers to Gaetz’s bid to become AG, or his broader political career, as his withdrawal immediately raised questions about what he will do next.

The 42-year-old Republican from Florida resigned from the House of Representatives last week after Trump appointed him to lead the Justice Department – the department that had investigated him over sex trafficking allegations.

Ginger has shown her support for her husband despite mounting backlash in the week since he was nominated. After Gaetz was first tapped for the powerful role, his wife wrote, “Attorney General will look great on you, my love.”

When he resigned from the House of Representatives, she wrote that Florida’s 1st Congressional District “is truly blessed to have you represent us.”

The former congressman wrote about X on Thursday: “I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support from so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation unfairly became a distraction from the critical work of the Trump/Vance transition.”

Trump responded to Gaetz’s withdrawal in a Truth Social post: “I greatly appreciate Matt Gaetz’s recent efforts in gaining approval to become Attorney General. He did very well, but at the same time he did not want to be a distraction for the government, for which he has great respect. Matt has a bright future and I look forward to seeing all the great things he will do!”

The investigation did not lead to charges against Gaetz, but his associate Joel Greenberg pleaded guilty in 2021 to sex trafficking of minors and other crimes. He is serving an eleven-year prison sentence.

The House Ethics Committee also investigated claims that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct, illegal drug use and other activities. A debate has arisen among members of Congress over whether a report of the commission’s findings should be released.

But media leaks have revealed that Gaetz made $10,000 in Venmo and PayPal payments between 2017 and 2019 to two women who later testified before the committee. Some of these payments were allegedly used in sex transactions, according to ABC News, which obtained data on the transactions.
