More than 167,000 pounds of ground beef packaged in Detroit recalled due to possible E. coli contamination

Ground beef packaged in Detroit and distributed to restaurants across the country is being recalled due to possible E. coli contamination.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), approximately 167,277 pounds of ground beef packaged by Wolverine Packing Co. are included in the recall.

View a full list of recalled products below.

The contamination was discovered after the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) was notified on November 13 that several people had become ill in Minnesota. These illnesses were linked to Wolverine’s ground beef, and samples collected a few days later tested positive for E. coli O157.

According to FSIS, 15 people in Minnesota have become ill from the beef. These illnesses started between November 2 and 10.

The USDA said E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially fatal bacteria that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2 to 8 days (average 3 to 4 days) after exposure to the organism.

While most people recover within a week, some develop a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur in people of any age, but is most common in children under 5 years of age and older adults. It is characterized by easy bruising, paleness and decreased urine production. Individuals who experience these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

The recalled products include both fresh beef with a best-by date of November 14, and frozen beef with a production date of October 22, 2024. They also have the establishment number “EST. 2574B” within the USDA mark of approval. .

FSIS said some restaurants may still have the beef. These companies must check their meat and throw it away or return it.
