Editor’s note: Officials previously said the boy was 7 years old and gave a different spelling for his last name. This story has been updated to reflect the correct spelling and age.

The team is still searching for a 6-year-old boy with autism who was reported missing in West Chester on Wednesday evening.

Police said Joshua Al-Lateef Jr. was last seen near his home on Wyndtree Drive. He had been dropped off by his bus driver earlier in the day and had been with his adult sister. He was then reported missing to the police around 5:30 p.m

Officials said Thursday afternoon they will be cycling in another group of citizens to assist in the search. They must arrive at the Muhlhauser Barn no later than 6:00 PM and be dressed appropriately for the weather. Volunteers are also asked to bring a flashlight.

Earlier in the day, fire officials said the aim is to re-survey areas near the missing Al-Lateef and further north; Groups were formed to search areas in Liberty Township and Fairfield as well. During an update at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, West Chester officials said there are eight retention ponds on the property on Wyndtree Drive; two of these were searched after dark on Wednesday evening, while five more were searched on Thursday morning.

Fire and police leading the search have asked anyone within a five-mile radius of Wyndtree Drive to check doorbell cameras or CCTV between 4.45pm and nightfall on Wednesday evening.

Al-Lateef is non-verbal, stands about 4 feet tall and weighs about 50-60 pounds. He was wearing a black or dark-colored jacket, a light brown shirt, light brown pants and black shoes. Police said he is known to like water and parks and may run away if you walk up to him. Police also said he is not allowed to come when his name is called.

Multiple different agencies — including Ohio State Highway Patrol, Texas Equusearch, Buckeye SAR and multiple agencies in the Cincinnati area — responded to assist in the search, along with nearly 300 volunteers from the local community, said West Chester Police Chief Brian Rebholz Thursday morning.

They are bringing in a variety of expertise and technical equipment to help, although Rebholz said crews are limited in their ability to use thermal imaging and some forms of aerial equipment due to weather. Still, Rebholz said crews have been able to launch drones to assist in the search and plan to continue doing so as long as weather permits. Butler County Sheriff’s Office was able to provide a helicopter Thursday to assist in the search.

Crews initially began searching the apartment complex where the boy lived, but have since expanded their search. They are now searching the northwestern parts of West Chester, with officials saying Al-Lateef may also have traveled to Liberty Township or Fairfield Township.

“We trust that our citizens and partners can take the photo we provided and call our hotline if they have information they believe is related,” said Randall Hanifen, assistant fire chief.

Anyone with information or who has seen Al-Lateef is asked to call police at 513-777-2231.
