Winter storm warning issued ahead of a snowy, muddy evening

ITHACA, NY – A winter storm warning has been issued for Tompkins County beginning at 4:00 PM Thursday and extending until 4:00 PM Friday, ahead of a forecast snowstorm expected to impact central New York and parts of Pennsylvania.

A Winter Storm Watch was issued Wednesday, but has been upgraded by the National Weather Service. The forecast calls for 1-4 inches of snow at lower elevations and 6-12 inches at higher elevations, with the possibility of higher snow totals.

It appears Tompkins County is set to miss the worst of the storm’s effects as the current local forecast predicts only 2 to 3 inches of wet snow Thursday night through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service warning: “Travel may be very difficult, especially with snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour in some areas overnight. The hazardous conditions may impact Friday morning commutes.”

It is also noted that due to the weight of the snow, trees and power lines may be affected by the storm. People can get updates on road conditions by calling 5-1-1 in New York.
