Bad serves as the first part of the film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, itself based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel in which the characters from The Wizard of Oz books and movies. Now that the original stage production has been split into two acts, the film version is also presented in two parts.

Director Jon M. Chu explained his decision to divide Bad in two films in a social media statement in April 2022. He said this was the best way to fully explore the storyline, character arcs and musical numbers without putting them together in a single film.

“As we prepared this production over the past year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to understand the story Bad in a single film without doing any real damage to it,” he said at the time.

The filmmaker continued: “As we tried to cut songs or shorten characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and not just create one Bad movie, only TWO!!!! With more space we can tell the story Bad as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.

Bad: Part 2 will premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025, almost exactly one year after the first film’s release.
