Up to 16 inches of snow is expected in about a dozen New York counties by late Friday, part of a storm moving east and flooding other parts of the Empire State with rain.

Winter storm warning in effect for NY: How much snow to expect

The following counties are under a winter storm warning: Tompkins, Madison, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Tioga, Broome, Delaware, Sullivan, Greene and Ulster counties. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for most of these counties until 4 p.m. In Greene and Ulster counties, the warning runs until 1 a.m. Saturday.

How much snow does New York get?

In most counties under storm warnings, including parts of the Catskills, 12 to 16 inches of snow are forecast at the highest elevations, and 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected at high terrain above 5,000 feet. Between 1 and 4 inches are expected in the valleys, according to the Weather Service. Up to a foot of snow is forecast in higher elevation Greene and Ulster counties, forecasters said.

Winter Weather Advisory issued in several New York counties

A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of the Southern Tier, western New York and just north of New York City. These warnings vary in timing, with most ending on Friday afternoon, but warnings in the New York City area ending by mid-morning.

  • In southern and central New York, a winter weather advisory covers Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Cayuga, Onondaga and Oneida counties. 1 to 3 inches of snow is forecast at higher elevations and 1 to 3 inches more widespread.
  • Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties in western New York are forecast to see between 3 and 12 inches of snow at higher elevations.
  • In Lewis County, totals of 3 to 6 inches are forecast in the higher elevations of the county by afternoon.
  • Up to 4 inches of snow is expected in Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.
  • Schoharie County is forecast to get 2 to 6 inches of snow.

Snow forecast for Buffalo and Rochester, NY

According to Weather Service meteorologists, Rochester (and Buffalo) was too warm for snow, causing heavy rainfall in both areas overnight. While temperatures dropped into the 30s in both western New York cities, it wasn’t cold enough for snow to form.
