‘Moana 2’ Sets Up Conservation Campaign With New Featurette

Disney is making waves with a new conservation campaign for ‘Moana 2,’ aimed at protecting our oceans and supporting real-life Moanas.

The Mouse House partners with National Geographic Pristine Seas and Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) to celebrate the explorer and Moana in all of us and answer the call to protect our oceans together.

An all-new featurette featuring footage from “Moana 2” shows how the ocean connects us, cares for us and has the power to inspire happiness and adventure across cultures and coastlines.

Since 2008, Pristine Seas has explored and surveyed underwater locations around the world, creating 29 marine protected areas covering more than 6.8 million square kilometers. These areas, which resemble national parks of the sea, benefit both people and the planet.

Working with Pristine Seas, this campaign supports the team’s work with local communities, indigenous peoples, government and partners to protect our ocean.

Additionally, the partnership with Polynesian Voyaging Society allows for the continued practice of traditional wayfinding, as seen in “Moana” and “Moana 2.” Before the invention of the compass, clocks, or GPS, islanders navigated the open ocean without instruments, instead using their observations of the stars, the sun, ocean waves, and other signs of nature for direction clues and location of a ship. at sea – just like Moana. Over time, these methods were in danger of being lost due to modernization, but the organization is leading a revival of the art and science of signage in the Pacific Islands.

Since PVS launched its traditional voyaging canoe Hōkūle’a nearly 50 years ago, the sacred vessel has become a vehicle for exploring the oceans, Earth and the natural world. With each journey, PVS began to recover lost cultural traditions and reveal the vital importance of humanity’s relationship with nature. Hōkūle’a has sailed nearly 300,000 miles, connecting with indigenous communities, ocean scientists, educators and students around the world. In 2025, PVS will resume its Moanauiākea voyage and Hōkūle’a will continue its circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean to help grow a movement that cares for our oceans and our Earth.

This effort is one of the many ways Disney is giving back to our communities in honor of “Moana 2,” a film that aims to bring happiness and a little bit of Disney magic to children and families around the world.

Additionally, it is part of Disney’s long-standing commitment to take meaningful and measurable action to support a healthier planet for people and wildlife, through a commitment called Disney Planet Possible. Since 1995, the Disney Conservation Fund has spent more than $125 million on global partnerships to inspire conservation action and positively impact wildlife and their habitats, including the oceans. Additionally, grants from the Disney Conservation Fund have helped support community-based programs committed to increasing the appreciation and protection of marine life in more than 40 countries and all five oceans.
