EASTERN PA, – More than 12 inches of snow fell in parts of eastern Pennsylvania on Friday, and forecasters are now monitoring a new storm threat that could impact Thanksgiving travel across the region.

The storm dropped 12 inches in parts of the Poconos overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Nearly 10 inches fell into Lake Harmony. In nearby New Jersey, some areas received similar totals, including Highland Lakes and High Point.

No accumulation was reported in the Philadelphia region, although the wet, cold rain continued into Friday morning. In some areas it mixes with light snow.

Now forecasters are keeping an eye on a new system that could threaten Thanksgiving travel plans.

“Another storm carrying the potential for snow accumulation will take shape across the eastern half of the country on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, which could result in widespread disruptions to travel and holiday festivities,” AccuWeather warned Friday in an update.

AccuWeather forecasters say there are two possible scenarios: The first scenario involves a slow-moving storm with longer lasting impacts in the Northeast. The second scenario sends the same storm south and off the Carolina coast through Thanksgiving. “This would be a less intense storm with showers and even some snow that could spread eastward from the Tennessee Valley to the East Coast,” AccuWeather said.

The storm could bring high winds that could threaten Thanksgiving Day parades. “Anything above sustained winds of 23 mph or gusts up to 54 mph would result in unsafe conditions” for those parades because of the large balloons.

“The possibility still exists that some may wake up to a white Thanksgiving or see snowflakes flying in areas that normally don’t get snow during the late November holiday,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys said in a news release.
