Kendrick Lamar addresses Lil Wayne’s disappointment with the Super Bowl halftime show

Kendrick Lamar heard about Lil Wayne’s thoughts on headlining the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime show.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper, 37, surprisingly released his sixth album, GNXon November 22. In the lyrics of the opening song “wacced out murals,” Lamar expressed Wayne’s disappointment at not being chosen to perform at the upcoming Super Bowl at the Caesars Superdome in the “A Milli” emcee’s hometown of New Orleans.

“Back in the day against Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I guess my hard work let Lil Wayne down / Anyway, call me crazy, everyone doubtful / Turn me into an eskimo, I drew the line and decimals,” Lamar raps in the second verse.

In other lyrics, the “Humble” artist seemingly nods to his high-profile feud with Drake and how many fellow hip-hop figures felt the need to take sides, causing him to feel a general lack of support within the genre upon landing the Super Bowl . performance.

“Won the Super Bowl and Nas was the only one congratulating me / All these excited people, I’m just happy to see their faces,” Lamar added on the track.

Lamar was announced as the headliner of the 2025 Super Bowl on September 7, and Wayne shared his thoughts in an Instagram video less than a week later. “First of all, I want to say, please forgive me for the delay,” he began.

“I had to get the strength to do this without breaking. I’m going to thank every voice, every opinion, all the care, all the love and support out there. Your words turned into weapons and kept me up when I tried to fall back,” said the artist of “6 Foot 7 Foot”.

Wayne expressed that he felt “hurt” when he saw the announcement that Lamar was headlining the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show. “I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a disappointment and automatically putting myself mentally in that position, as if someone told me this was my position,” he continued.

The Young Money Entertainment founder added, “But I thought there was nothing better than that place and that stage and that platform in my city, so it hurt.”

He then shifted the focus to his “damn amazing” fans. “It made me feel like I didn’t get this opportunity, and when I felt that way, you guys reminded me that I’m not without you, and that’s an amazing reality,” Wayne said.

“Like I said, it broke me, and I’m just trying to put myself back together, but my God, did you all help me,” he told fans. “Thank you to all my peers, my friends, my family, my friends in sports television and everyone who represents me. I really appreciate that, I really do. I feel like I let you all down by not getting that opportunity, but I’m working on myself, and I’m working, so thank you.”
