Las Vegas GP: Red Bull got stuck in practice with the wrong rear wing

Red Bull got stuck with the wrong rear wing configuration during the first training sessions for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen can win the world title.

Verstappen finished 17th in the second training session on Thursday, while teammate Sergio Pérez finished 19th.

Unlike its rivals, Red Bull does not have specific wings for different circuits at this point in the season, having opted for a wing designed exclusively for the Vegas circuit.

Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko said: “We don’t have another rear wing, a smaller rear wing, as we see with our competitors. It would certainly be more useful.”

Red Bull had tuned their car to maximize straight-line speed on a street circuit with a long run along the famous Las Vegas Strip, but the team’s practice problems suggested they had sacrificed too much in the corners.

Red Bull has made adjustments to the wing to resolve some of the issues it encountered on Thursday and hopes to be in better shape going into qualifying, a source told ESPN.

Verstappen can close the championship in Vegas if he finishes ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris. That seems an unlikely outcome at this stage as McLaren is expected to be very strong.

Verstappen won the first Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023.
