Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero is bisexual in Wicked, Bowen Yang thinks

Saturday evening live regular Bowen Yang has shared his suspicions about this Bad heartthrob Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, is “canonically bisexual.”

Speaking exclusively to PinkNews, Yang, who stars in Jon M. Chu’s musical epic as Glinda The Good Witch’s (Ariana Grande) bestie Pfannee, suggested that Fiyero has always been a bit fruity.

“I think Fiyero is canonically bisexual, but I feel like this is something that went over my head growing up watching Badsaying, ‘Well, Fiyero is just so boisterous and everyone loves him,’ but that’s because he kind of leans towards these narcissistic qualities, or these seemingly narcissistic qualities about him,” Bowen explained.

“But no, something about Jonny in this is so… captivating. It’s fun,” he added coquettishly Bad‘s release this Friday (November 22).

Bowen’s co-star Bronwyn James, who plays Glinda’s other right-hand man, jokingly agreed: “It’s fun.” Sweet.”

Last month, Bowen teased that Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero exudes “bisexual energy.” Bad. That said, Fiyero’s role in the The Wizard of Oz prequel is the love interest of both Glinda and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo).

Pfannee, on the other hand, is explicitly strange and becomes overwhelmingly nervous at Fiyero’s arrival at Shiz University. Honestly, we can see why.

Yang and James went on to explain why the story is on their minds Bad has resonated with queer people for almost thirty years. And no, it’s not just the undeniable sapphic chemistry between Elphaba and Glinda (although that’s certainly part of the appeal).

“It’s one of these stories that has a running moral of like, a person being left out and a person being left out because of something that he or she was born with,” James shared.

“I think, especially with queer people as an umbrella term, a lot of us can relate to that, and that’s why Bad has stood the test of time for so long because we can all look at Elphaba and see her struggle and see her stick to her guns and, no matter what happens, people be damned, she will stick to her integrity.

In real life, both Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella.

“It’s also a story about reconciling what the world tells you you are, and who you know you are, and that’s also part of being queer,” Yang agreed.

“It’s just rejecting certain things that people project onto you and then you think, ‘I am me. I’m part of this community of other people, but I’m also individual in many ways and that’s Elphaba and that’s Glinda.

During their interview with PinkNews, Glinda’s on-screen disciples talked about the experience of learning the soon-to-be iconic bookography from the ‘What Is This Feeling?’ performance.

“The way it’s burned into my memory, on my deathbed I’ll be 90 years old and something like that…” Brown laughed as he hummed the song. “I’m going to do that in bed tonight.”

“I mean, we learned that beforehand,” Yang revealed. We got a crash course on all the choreography from the most incredible team of dancers and choreographers, who literally had hordes of people to care for and interact with.

“We learned it all and then they refreshed us during filming and tweaked things, tweaked things. I mean, adapt is the big word there, they were so patient with us and made sure we could execute.

“I think we actually did a pretty good job,” Brown added.

Bad hits theaters on Friday, November 22.
