Disney+ is celebrating the release of Wicked Movie with a clever addition

Disney Plus honored Universal’s release Bad by adding his own Wizard of Oz movie to the Home banner.

Behind an epic cast of actors led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Bad opened to near consensus on November 22. It will be the first film in a two-part saga, which will be completed upon the release of the sequel (Bad part 2) on November 21, 2025.

The film is inspired by both the Broadway play of the same name (which debuted in 2003) and its parent story, the 1937 story. The Wizard of Oz film.

In honor of Bad‘s release, Disney Plus changed its top banner carousel to add Sam Raimi’s 2013 film Oz The great and powerful added to the rotating list of projects.

Starring James Franco, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz Oz The great and powerful tells the story of circus magician Oscar Diggs, who is taken from Kansas to Oz. He then meets three witches as he sets out on a journey to take his place as the great wizard who set out to save the Emerald City, better known as Oz.

Disney appears to be using the film’s place on Disney+ to celebrate Universal’s release Bad part 1which debuted in theaters on November 22.

These films have a unique connection, as they are both prequel stories that lead into the 1937s The Wizard of Oz. Oz the Great and Powerful focuses on the titular powerful leader of the Emerald City Bad highlights Elphaba and Glinda, who become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch respectively.

This step is particularly unique considering that Bad will not stream on Disney+. Being a universal production, it will eventually find its streaming home on Peacock after its digital release.

When will Wicked be released on streaming?

Bad has only just begun its box office run, though it’s already performing valiantly on that front. Deadline reported that the film had collected $48.5 million from its Friday night opening and Thursday previews, which could give the film an opening weekend of around $120 million.

That number would give Bad the third biggest opening weekend of any 2024 film, behind only Inside out 2 ($154.2 million) and Deadpool and Wolverine ($211.4 million).

Universal’s usual time frame from theater to streaming has been around 120 days in recent years, with exceptions like 2023 Oppenheimer. For reference, below are some sample time frames for recent Universal hits:

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie
    • Theatrical: April 5, 2023
    • Streaming: August 3, 2023 (120 days after theater performance)
  • Quick
    • Theatrical: May 19, 2023
    • Streaming: September 15, 2023 (119 days after theater performance)
  • Oppenheimer
    • Theatrical: July 21, 2023
    • Streaming: February 16, 2024 (210 days after theater performance)

  • Twisters:
    • Theatrical: July 19, 2024
    • Digital: November 15, 2024 (119 days after cinema)

Fans can expect this at the earliest Bad come to Peacock in early to mid-March 2025 (approximately March 22 if the 120 day mark is reached). However, if it pulls Oppenheimerfigures, this could be postponed until later in the spring or even until next summer.

Once it hits Peacock, many will surely watch it in preparation for Bad part 2which at the time of writing is about a year away from release.

Bad part 1 is now playing in theaters around the world.
