The good reason there will be no ‘Arcane’ season 3

If you’re wondering if there will be an Arcane season 3 after this (currently) great season ends, the answer is no. It wasn’t canceled, Netflix isn’t that crazy, but it was always meant to end after two seasons.

It turns out there is a good reason for this. Not just because they designed the series with a specific storyline for these characters that doesn’t have to drag on endlessly (that is a good reason if you ask me), but because Riot has even bigger, broader plans for League of Legends content.

In an interview with Collider, Arcane co-creator Christian Linke said the following about future plans, with not just one, but many projects currently in development:

“Yes, we are currently developing a number of follow-up projects. In fact, Arcane has always been considered the first step, a bit like the trial by fire. You have to think, ‘Can we do this? Do we have the chops? Do we have the characters? Do we have the stories?” So now we’re working on the sequels and it’s really fun to look at some of the other characters and regions of our world.

The idea is to expand into the much wider world of the game, as there are currently 169 champions in the roster. They just added Arcane’s Ambessa. And in Arcane itself, we’ve seen that there are really only a dozen or so champions appearing in main, guest or cameo roles, leaving over 90% of the cast available for other sequels in their own corners of the League universe .

It’s an interesting interview overall, as it touches on why these shows are taking so long to animate (given the quality, you might understand) and how it “wasn’t easy to get” to get Netflix to he agreed to release the seasons in three-episode chunks over three weekends in a row, something literally none of the hundreds of other shows ever do. But if you’re perhaps the highest-rated show in the service’s history, you get special consideration (although they could even negotiate that for the premiere last time, which coincided with League of Legends esports).

I don’t think the bad news here is that Arcane will end after season 2, but rather that it could be a very long time before another show pops up in this universe. Granted, I’d say Arcane Season 2 has been worth the wait, but I’m not looking forward to it being 2030 before a new two-season League series can tell a full story.
