Steven Ashworth rolls ankle, uncertain for Las Vegas event

Before Steven Ashworth knew the fate of another quick-fire 3-pointer, the Creighton guard crashed down on the hardwood and rolled on the floor, writhing in pain, in the final minutes of Friday’s loss to Nebraska.

Ashworth laid there, grasping at his right ankle, with the Bluejays down 10 with four-plus minutes to play in Friday’s 74-63 loss to Nebraska.

Bluejays coach Greg McDermott walked over from the bench to check on his starting point guard and, after a brief conversation with him, walked back to the bench. Moments later, Ashworth was helped off the floor while holding his right leg off the ground.

“We have no idea how long Steven’s gonna be out,” McDermott said. “I think it’s gonna be a while.”

Ashworth — CU’s second-leading scorer behind Ryan Kalkbrenner — landed on a defender’s foot after he let loose on the trey.

“You’re defenseless in that situation,” McDermott said. “He torqued it pretty good.”

The Bluejays aren’t sure how long they’ll be without Ashworth, a former Utah State transfer who’s developed into one of Creighton’s best players in his second year with the program. McDermott said after Friday’s loss that they will “dig into that” on Saturday.

CU plays next week at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas. San Diego State (2-1) and Texas A&M (4-1) are Creighton’s opponents on Tuesday and Wednesday.
