Review of Missouri State football after loss to South Dakota State

Missouri State Football had a chance to leave the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the FCS with a share of the league title, but was no match for South Dakota State.

South Dakota State’s 45-9 victory over Missouri State (8-4, 6-2 MVFC) on Saturday afternoon at Plaster Stadium ended the Bears’ FCS era and sent them into the offseason in search of a roster that can better compete for a conference American title at the FBS level.

Here’s how we graded the Bears’ season finale loss to South Dakota State (10-2, 7-1 MVFC).

Missouri State Football Offense: F

Against the best defense in the FCS, the Bears’ high-powered offense looked anything but. The Bears couldn’t find a rhythm through the air or on the ground.

Missouri State Football Defense: D

For the second week in a row, the Bears allowed too many explosive plays. There was some improvement in slowing down one of the best ground games in the country, but it wasn’t enough.

Missouri State Football Special Teams: A

Yousef Obeid made a career-high 50-yard field goal. The unit made a big play in the first half when they recovered a muffed South Dakota State kickoff return, putting the Bears at the SDSU 2, but they were unable to capitalize.

Missouri State Football Coaching: C-

There were times when Ryan Beard and his staff looked too conservative when going up against one of the subdivision juggernauts. Failing to get a touchdown from two yards out killed any hope the Bears had.

General: C-

It was clear from the Bears’ loss at North Dakota State last week that they would not be competitive with the elite teams in the subdivision. The 2024 season will go down as one of the best in program history, but there are glaring holes on the roster that the Bears must fill before they can be competitive at the next level.
