Chaos reigns after Arizona State fans prematurely storm the field as BYU is upset

TEMPE, ARIZONA - NOVEMBER 23: Fans rush the field after a restart of play with 1 second left on the clock during the NCAAF game against the Brigham Young Cougars at Mountain America Stadium on November 23, 2024 in Tempe, Arizona. Arizona State fans celebrated a key win over No. 14 BYU with a raucous field rush that knocked down the goalposts and virtually covered the grass at Sun Devil Stadium.

And then the officials ruled that there was one second left.

In one of the most chaotic endings in recent college football history, thousands of Sun Devils fans tried to leave the field so BYU could get another shot at the end zone. On fourth and goal, Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt had thrown the ball high and deep thinking it would end the game, but the replay showed the ball ended up out of bounds with one second on the clock. The result was a turnover on downs.

Unfortunately, getting thousands of people to all return to their seats in a huge stadium is quite difficult, akin to putting toothpaste back in the tube. The referees decided to simply remove the fans from the field of play. And put the goalposts back upright.

Taste the chaos for yourself:

Thirteen minutes later, BYU went for the win trailing 28-23 and with Arizona State fans on the sidelines. The Cougars came shockingly close to a miracle when Jake Retzlaff got the ball to wide receiver Chase Roberts, but Roberts was just short of the end zone (the play was curiously ruled incomplete, though it probably would have been overturned if it had mattered done).

Arizona State stormed the field again, with some ugliness directed at the BYU players.

Oddly enough, there is precedent for referees just giving Arizona State the win after the Sun Devils pretended the game was over, but an appearance of control actually allowed the game to be completed in this case.

The win throws the Big 12 into further chaos on a day that also saw No. 16 Colorado fall to Kansas. There is now a path to a four-way tie in the wide-open division. If more devastation occurs, the state of Arizona will likely be ready.
