Thanksgiving week forecast: Weather could impact Thanksgiving travel

With Thanksgiving just days away, there could be problems for travelers in parts of the country due to cold temperatures and possible rain and snow across the country.

In terms of temperatures, seasonally cold weather is expected to continue across much of the country over the next week. While the low temperatures won’t be record-breaking, a cold snap will hit several cities in time for Thanksgiving.

Early this week, a system developing over the Great Lakes will move across the eastern U.S., bringing another round of precipitation that extends from the Deep South into the Midwest and Northeast.

At the same time, another system will push into the West Coast, bringing more rain and heavy mountain snow across the Cascades and Rockies. This system will reestablish itself in Central America by mid-week before heading towards the East Coast on Thursday and Friday.

While parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic are expecting heavy rain on Thanksgiving Day, this system could bring more wintry weather to parts of the Midwest and Northeast Thursday through Friday.

Monday

In the west, moderate rain and mountain snow will continue as another storm begins to form over the Great Lakes. This storm appears to be fairly weak, but could still bring rain and some sleet to parts of Michigan and Wisconsin.

Tuesday

As the storm moves northeast from the Great Lakes Monday evening into Tuesday, we will see the chance of rain along the East Coast. This storm, along with a prolonged cold front, will bring rain chances to cities including New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Charlotte and Atlanta on Tuesday.

This storm does not appear to cause severe weather conditions, but could cause widespread travel delays in the East.

Meanwhile, in the West, a significant winter storm in the Rockies could reduce the amount of heavy snowfall in the mountains, while cities like Denver and its major airport could also be affected. That snow threat will continue into Wednesday in the Denver area.

Wednesday

Another storm is expected to form over the central US on Wednesday, bringing a chance of sleet in the Chicago area, with rain in cities such as St. Louis and Memphis.

The storm will move eastward, potentially bringing snow and rain to parts of the Great Lakes and the Northeast late Wednesday.

This storm has the potential to disrupt both road and air traffic across much of the East around Thanksgiving.

Thursday

This storm could bring a mix of rain and snow to parts of the Northeast, with rain possible across much of the South.

A lot could change about this forecast, but as of now there is a potential travel disruption for Thanksgiving in the East.

This storm does not appear to be a major historic snowstorm, but a mixed precipitation event during a busy travel week is possible.

Friday

Depending on how quickly the storm moves, there could be lingering impacts across the eastern US on Friday, with the morning potentially still bringing very active weather to the Northeast. Some weather models show a mix of rain and snow.

After that storm dissipates, cold weather replenishes.

The outlook for the end of the week into early December looks chilly across the eastern 2/3 of the country, so it could really start to feel like winter as we welcome the last month of 2024.
