American Airlines is expanding its crackdown on ‘gate lice’ ahead of Thanksgiving travel

American Airlines has announced that it will expand its new technology to put an end to a process known as “gate licing,” in which passengers cut through lines in hopes of boarding a flight early.

The system will emit an audible signal when a passenger attempts to board the aircraft before the assigned command is called and will automatically reject the ticket.

American Airlines first tested the technology last month at Albuquerque International Sunport in New Mexico, Tucson International Airport in Arizona and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.

It will now be expanded to more than 100 airports before the holidays.

Julie Rath, senior vice president of American Airport Operations, Reservations and Service Recovery, said in a press release that the ability for customers to board with their assigned group is important to them.

“The initial positive response from customers and team members has exceeded our expectations, so we’re excited to leverage this technology to help them move forward ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Rath.

Travelers who board with a companion who already has a previous boarding group can still do so. According to the press release, the agent ignored the warning by accepting the boarding pass.

The technology “provides team members with greater visibility into the number of customers in each boarding group” and “displays the estimated time of arrival for inbound flight connections,” according to American’s site.

Some of the airports listed in the expansion program include Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia.

The term “gate lice” has gained popularity on social media in recent years. Although it is unknown who invented the phrase, several travel blogs and Reddit forums discuss “port lice” at length.

In October, an American representative told Fox News Digital via email, “The new technology is designed to ensure customers easily receive the benefits of priority boarding.”

The rep added that it “helps improve the onboarding experience by providing greater visibility into onboarding progress for our team.”

Jacqueline Whitmore, a former flight attendant and etiquette expert based in Mount Dora, Florida, told Fox News Digital via email that she supports American Airlines’ latest tactic.
