Former Celtics forward suffers season-ending injury

Grant Williams’ year has ended unhappily in Charlotte, just a month into the season. The former Celtics forward suffered a torn ACL and is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the regular season, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. Williams suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of the Hornets’ loss to the Bucks on Saturday night. Williams appeared to confirm the diagnosis with his post on X on Sunday.

“Appreciate all the love and support from those who have reached out,” he wrote. “Time to get to work, that’s all we can do.”

The 25-year-old big man is in the middle of his second season with the Hornets, where he has played a major role under new coach and former Boston assistant Charles Lee. Williams averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 36.5 percent from three-point range. He had started seven games out of his 16 appearances for a rebuilding Charlotte team.

Williams spent four seasons in Boston early in his career after being drafted 22nd overall in 2019. Despite being a crucial part of Boston’s playoff teams during his four years, the Celtics opted to sign and trade Williams last season. acquiring Kristaps Porzingis in a separate deal.

Williams was signed to a four-year contract with the Mavericks after the trade, but lasted only half a season in Dallas before the team moved him to Charlotte in a midseason deal for P.J. Washington.

The Hornets are already done starting Mark Williams at center due to injury, so they will now be extremely undermanned in the frontcourt with the 6-foot-4 forward sidelined. Charlotte is currently 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 6-10 record.
