Warming notes: Butler, Rozier, Jaquez, Richardson, Ware, Burks, Herro

After a four-match absence due to an ankle sprain, Heat star Jimmy Butler had his best game of the fall when he returned to action on Monday, recording season highs in points (30) and rebounds (10) as Miami defeated Philadelphia by 29 points in his 34 minutes of action.

However, Butler may not get a chance to build on that momentum when the team resumes Sunday’s schedule against Dallas after a five-day layoff. The veteran forward is listed as questionable to play against the Mavericks due to an illness, writes Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald.

While Butler’s status is up in the air, there is good news elsewhere on the Heat’s injury report, according to Chiang, who says Terry Rozier (discomfort of the right foot) and Jaime Jacques (sprained right ankle) are both expected to play Sunday. Rozier is listed as likely while Jaquez is considered available. Josh Richardsonwho missed Thursday’s practice due to heel soreness, is also not on the injury report and should be good to go.

Here’s more from Miami:

  • If the Heat regret the draft Kel’el Ware with the No. 15 pick in this year’s draft, considering that Jared McCain (no. 16) and Dalton Knecht (No. 17) have been the most impressive rookies in the NBA so far this season? Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel weighs in on that question and explains the thinking behind Miami’s selection of Ware. It’s possible the decision to pick Ware will become a draft regret reminiscent of when the Heat Precious Achiuwa a place for it Tyrese Maxey in 2020, Winderman acknowledges. However, he emphasizes that it is still far too early to pass judgment on the 20-year-old center, who has logged just 48 minutes in eight games.
  • Alec Burkswho is on his eighth NBA team, has seen his role fluctuate often in recent seasons, so he was unfazed by sitting out five straight games and then playing nearly 19 minutes in Monday’s win over the Sixers, as Winderman describes for The Sun Sentinel. Burks was a plus-27 with seven points, six rebounds and three assists in his return to the rotation. “He’s such a great example for young players coming in to always be ready, be prepared, understand what the system is and understand how you can add value,” head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “And then don’t get caught up in all the emotional, wild swings, for example if your playing time isn’t going quite the way you want, or if you’re not getting the attacking opportunities you want. … He’s a professional. And that gets thrown around a lot, but when you actually experience it and see it, you really appreciate it.”
  • Tyler Herro‘s 24.2 points and 5.2 assists per game are career highs. Perhaps even more important is his field goal percentage of 48.6% and three-point percentage of 45.2%, both of which are well above his career marks. According to Spoelstra, Herro’s scoring efficiency has been “really important” to him and the Heat. “As a player, you always want to come to a place like this where you can play basketball so efficiently that energy is saved at the same time,” the Heat head coach said, according to Chiang. ‘He doesn’t force it, he doesn’t like to spend too much energy on it. He just reads the game, the defenses. He has a confidence that continues to grow every year, so he knows what he can do and how he can help us.”
