Mild today; Showers arrive tonight: the Alabama Weather Blog

WARMEST DAY OF THE WEEK: We are forecasting a high today in the 70-75 degree range across Alabama; it will be by far the hottest day of the week. Expect partly sunny skies, but clouds will increase late in the day ahead of an approaching cold front. The front will bring showers to Alabama tonight and early tomorrow morning…there may be some thunder, but there is no risk of severe storms. Rain will be light and skies will be sunny during the day tomorrow with a high closer to 60 degrees.

THANKSGIVING: Clouds will increase Wednesday, but the day will be dry with highs in the 60s. Another front will move into Alabama Wednesday evening on Thanksgiving Day/Thursday bringing rain and a few thunderstorms. The models still do not agree well on timing and wind fields; for now, the best idea is that the biggest window for rain and storms will come around midnight Wednesday night through Thursday afternoon. Just understand that this may change in future predictions as we gain more clarity.

For now, there is no formal risk of severe weather defined by SPC (NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center). A “marginal risk” could emerge at some point, but with low instability values and unfavorable wind profiles, the overall risk of severe thunderstorms appears low. But again, keep an eye out for possible forecast changes. Rain amounts will be about an inch for the northern half of Alabama, with amounts of about 1/2 inch for the state’s southern counties.

Temperatures on Thanksgiving Day will hover in the 50s over North Alabama, with temperatures in the low 60s south.

FRIDAY AND WEEKEND: Much colder air pushes into the Deep South. The weather will be dry with sunny days and nice nights, but temperatures will not exceed 40 degrees in the northern half of the state. There will likely be a statewide freeze Saturday morning, with temperatures in the low 20s in many places.

NEXT WEEK: A secondary wave of cold air arrives late this weekend, and Monday and Tuesday will see highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s in most places. Some colder spots in North Alabama could reach the upper teens early Monday morning. Highs rise a bit, reaching the 50s in the second half of the week, with lows in the 30s. The air will be dry and there is no risk of any precipitation during the week. Watch the video briefing for maps, images and more details.

IRON BOWL: The weather will be cold and dry in Tuscaloosa on Saturday for this year’s Iron Bowl (Auburn, Alabama, kickoff 2:30 PM CT). The skies will be sunny and the temperature will drop from almost 48 degrees at kickoff to almost 40 degrees at the final whistle.

ON THIS DATE IN 1950: A slow-moving, powerful storm system dumped heavy snow over much of the central Appalachians from November 22 to 30, 1950. Known as “The Great Appalachian Storm of 1950,” the system blanketed areas from western Pennsylvania south deep into West Virginia with more than 2 feet of snow. Several locations received more than 60 inches of snow, with Coburn Creek, West Virginia, reporting the largest snowfall total: a whopping 60 inches.

The bone-chilling cold also extended from the Northeast into the Ohio Valley and all the way into the far Southeast. Temperatures dropped to 70°F in Pensacola, 5°F in Birmingham, 3°F in Atlanta and 1°F in Asheville, NC. And this record cold led to widespread crop damage, especially in Georgia and South Carolina. At the time, the Great Appalachian Storm of 1950 was one of the costliest storms ever recorded, contributing to at least 160 deaths.
