Who misses Hawaiian woman Hannah Kobayashi?

As the search continues for Hannah Kobayashi — the 30-year-old Hawaiian woman who went missing earlier this month after failing to board a connecting flight from LAX to New York — her father has been found dead in a parking lot near LAX. According to NBC Los Angeles, the LAPD indicated the death was an apparent suicide. “After thirteen days of tireless searching throughout Los Angeles, Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically committed suicide,” a nonprofit missing persons organization believed to be supporting the Kobayashi family said in a statement. “This loss has immeasurably increased the family’s suffering.”

Ryan Kobayashi, who was 58, had recently traveled to Los Angeles to join the search for his daughter, who was due to arrive in New York on November 8 to meet family. Three days later, friends and family said they received alarming text messages from Hannah’s line suggesting someone had tried to steal her identity. Surveillance footage from that day shows Hannah and an unknown person at a Los Angeles train station; nothing has been heard from her since. At a wake for Hannah last Thursday, her aunt, Laire Pidgeon, said the family was trying to get the LAPD to “take us seriously because it’s been 11 days.” “The fact that she does not have a mental illness and is not elderly does not mean that nothing has happened to her.”

Police say Ryan Kobayashi was killed after jumping from an LAX parking lot early Sunday morning, according to NBC Los Angeles. Days before his death, he spoke to KTLA about his daughter’s disappearance and expressed hope that she would contact him. “I miss her,” Ryan said. “I just want her to know that, and for her to contact me – anything.”
