Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Countryman’ gets better reviews than Yellowstone’s debut

Taylor Sheridan, otherwise known as the hardest working man in crime-based media, just launched a new show last week, Landman, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Ali Larter. Here’s the summary:

“In the heart of Texas, losers and billionaires are trying to get rich quick in the oil industry; Tommy Norris, a struggling executive, tries to take his company to the top during the fuel boom.”

So this time no livestock farming, but the oil industry, which is of course ripe for investigation into corruption and all kinds of other crimes. Probably murder at some point, if I had to guess, given Sheridan’s history.

Interestingly, the show is rated better than Yellowstone’s season 1 debut in 2018. Critics weren’t on board at the time, as it only had a 58% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Landman has instead arrived here with a 74% release. However, that is lower than the other four seasons of Yellowstone that have currently been released. It has a lower audience score overall at 66%, but that’s at least higher than the 40% that Yellowstone season 5 currently has as fans disagree with the current direction in the Kevin Costner-less final episodes here.

Sheridan has currently created or produced an astonishing amount of content for Paramount, including Yellowstone, which remains one of the most popular shows in America and is performing especially well on linear TV at a time when that rarely happens. But in addition to Yellowstone and some of its spin-offs, he is also behind series such as Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness. And now, Husbandman. In total, I think he’s had about a dozen shows over the years that he was involved in in some way.

One thing to note is that all of these shows are on Paramount Plus in addition Yellowstone, as that show has a deal with NBC and Peacock until 2025. But Paramount has now built up a huge pile of mostly very solid Taylor Sheridan content, where it makes up the bulk of the successful programming on the service. It’s hard to really remember anything that was an outright bomb from him, because even though not everything is a new Yellowstone, most of these series are generally well received by critics and fans and have been renewed for multiple seasons.

Countryman getting Billy Bob Thornton is a huge asset because he is such a talented actor and would slide right into this type of storyline. I’ll check it out when I get the chance.
