Coast-to-coast storm disrupts Thanksgiving holiday travel with heavy snow and severe storms

Millions of Americans in the US have started packing up the roads and airports ahead of Thanksgiving, but a powerful storm moving from coast to coast could disrupt travel ahead of the holiday and as people begin their journey home start after celebrating with family and friends.

The first half of the busy Thanksgiving travel week includes storms dumping rain and mountain snow in the West, while the eastern half of the country experiences rain, sleet and snow.

As if that wasn’t enough to dampen the holiday spirit, the FOX Forecast Center is tracking another winter storm that could have a significant impact on travel in the Northeast as millions of people prepare to head home.

Winter weather hits the West

The FOX Forecast Center said the last of a series of low pressure systems is moving across the West Coast and into the Rockies, bringing winter weather and rain to the region.

This is the same system that brought heavy rain to California on Monday. As the storm continues its journey eastward, it is expected to develop into a significant winter storm in parts of Colorado and Utah.

Winter storm warnings are in effect across the region, anticipating snow totals that could reach 10 feet at the highest elevations.

This is expected to make traveling over mountain passes extremely difficult, if not impossible, as Thanksgiving approaches.

On Wednesday, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Denver could all see some form of precipitation.

However, the FOX Forecast Center does not expect any major impacts in Denver at this time. Conditions on major highways such as Interstate 25 and Interstate 70 could worsen before the system leaves the region before Thanksgiving Day.

Rain and snow rolling through the east

Millions of people in the eastern half of the US are also getting in on the action and should be patient as travel delays are expected on Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

The FOX Forecast Center said a cold front stretching from southeast to northern New England is producing rain, snow, freezing rain and even some thunderstorms in some spots.

The major airports in the east are likely to experience some disruption due to the large number of people traveling, bad weather and low ceilings. Poor visibility and high winds will be a concern as the system moves off the east coast.

Further north, where temperatures have been colder, freezing rain threatened to make travel in New England dangerous for those venturing into parts of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

The good news is that temperatures will rise as the day progresses and the ice will begin to melt.

Severe weather is unlikely in the Southeast, but rain and possible thunderstorms could cause delays at the world’s busiest airport: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Most of the showers and thunderstorms will have cleared by Tuesday evening.

As if the pre-Thanksgiving travel woes weren’t enough, the FOX Forecast Center is also tracking another winter storm on Thanksgiving Day, which is expected to delay last-minute holiday travel as well as those shopping or starting their travels on Black Friday. back home.

This is all due to the winter storm currently sweeping through the West. The system will move northeast through the Midwest and Ohio Valley on Thursday.

The FOX Forecast Center expects a line of showers and thunderstorms to move through the Southeast and the Tennessee Valley on Thursday. Some of those storms could become intense with damaging winds.

For those of you driving on Thanksgiving, delays are expected on roads and at airports.

In the north, heavier rain is likely across parts of the mid-Atlantic and northeast through Thursday night. The FOX Forecast Center said the system will strengthen as it approaches the region, and winds could also pick up and cause delays at airports in Washington, Baltimore, New York City and Philadelphia.

Snow will break out from the Midwest to New England, north of the low pressure system. Cold air will initially be limited as the system leaves the Midwest, but as the low temperatures strengthen it will draw in colder air from Canada.

The FOX Forecast Center said snow totals are expected to be light except for parts of the interior Northeast. That’s where heavier snow could accumulate across the region, especially at higher elevations.

Upstate New York, the Green Mountains in Vermont and the White Mountains in New Hampshire will all likely see snow as the low tracks off the coast through Thursday evening.

Cities in New York, such as Syracuse, Buffalo and Binghamton, will all likely experience accumulating snow as well.
