Subway withdraws $6.99 meal deal due to poor performance and launches new alternative

UNDATED (WKRC) – Subway is withdrawing its $6.99 meal deal due to lower-than-expected sales.

According to Restaurant Business Online (RBO), citing a notice sent to operators last Friday, fast food giant Subway is withdrawing its $6.99 meal deal earlier than initially planned due to lower-than-expected performance.

The $6.99 Subway meal deal offered guests the following:

  • A six-inch sub
  • A bag of chips or two cookies
  • A small fountain drink

The deal, which was first launched on November 3, will be withdrawn on Wednesday, according to RBO, which noted that the offer will remain available through Subway’s digital channels through December 26.

“The Meal Deal is designed to increase footfall, revenue and ultimately profitability at the restaurant level, and delivered on these objectives during the market test,” the message to operators said, RBO said. “While the national Meal Deal promotion is delivering the expected number of daily redemptions, the promotion is generally not delivering the expected results.”

According to the outlet, Subway will switch to a 20% off coupon on every sub, with the offer expected to be available to customers until January 5.

The company said in a statement to RBO that it will quickly adjust value offerings as needed.

“Subway’s approach to value is thoughtful and strategic, using data to balance consumer needs while protecting franchisee profits,” the company told RBO. “We are constantly testing new value platforms aimed at driving profitable traffic and encouraging repeat visits. We take feedback and data seriously, and when necessary, we quickly adjust course to ensure we’re doing what’s best for our franchisees, guests and the overall business.”

RBO reported that Subway has struggled to roll out value deals due to pushback from franchisees, noting that some franchisees have refused to participate in value deals, which has affected their effectiveness.
