Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo pay the same for ‘Wicked’

play

While “Wicked” may defy gravity, the studio responsible for the musical blockbuster had to make it clear that there was nothing bad about the way its stars were paid.

Universal Pictures released a statement Tuesday, obtained by USA TODAY, clarifying that “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were paid the same amount for their work on the film.

The studio released the statement as rumors began swirling on social media about a large pay gap between the two.

“Reports of pay disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on internet fodder,” the statement said. “The women received equal pay for their work on ‘Wicked’.”

The company did not mention how much the couple was paid in the statement.

“Wicked” has a six-figure opening weekend

The first part of the film adaptation of the stage musical, based on Gregory McGuire’s book, topped the worldwide box office in its opening weekend, taking in $164.2 million, with $114 million coming from North American theaters.

According to the studio, it was the biggest opening weekend for a film based on a Broadway musical, ahead of the worldwide debut of Universal’s 2012 release “Les Miserables.”

The second act of the film will hit theaters in 2025.
