This season marks Aston Villa’s first appearance in the Champions League/European Cup since 1983, the season after they won the tournament for the first and only time. Looking at the eight opponents Villa will face this season, it is difficult to imagine a series of teams with more history in the competition than these.

Bayern Munich are six-time European champions, while Juventus are two-time winners and also have the dubious honor of having finished runners-up a whopping seven times, the most in the competition’s history. Celtic also became champions in 1967.

Monaco and Club Brugge each reached the final of the tournament once, while Young Boys and RB Leipzig each reached the semi-finals once. Even Bologna, the only one of Villa’s eight opponents not to have played in the last four, has played in the semi-finals of the Europa League/UEFA Cup.
