Winter weather warnings in 8 states if 12 inches of snow falls

Thanksgiving looks set to be wet and cold for millions of Americans across the Northeast, as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a slew of winter weather warnings and advisories.

Heavy snow is expected across New England and beyond today, which could derail holiday plans across the region. Snow and rain are expected to extend from northern Pennsylvania into Maine throughout Thursday and Friday morning.

Nearly all of Maine is covered in winter storm warnings, with 6 to 10 inches of snow expected from 4 p.m. ET Thursday through Friday morning. Higher amounts are expected in Piscataquis County into southeastern Aroostook County.

“Periods of locally heavy snow may result in rapid snow accumulation,” the NWS warning reads. “The weight of heavy, wet snow on tree limbs can down power lines and cause sporadic power outages. Travel can be very difficult due to heavy snow causing poor visibility, and wet roads icing under new snow.”

Similar amounts of snow are expected in neighboring New Hampshire, with a warning for Sullivan, Carroll and Grafton counties. In addition to potential power outages, driving conditions are likely to become hazardous throughout the area.

Winter storm warnings are also active in Bennington, Orange, Rutland, Windham and Windsor counties in Vermont. Up to 12 inches of snow is expected in Bennington and Windham from early Thursday morning through 1 a.m. Friday, likely impacting Thanksgiving travel.

Parts of central and eastern New York are under several winter storm warnings, while several warnings have also been issued in the southern part of the state. About 4 inches of snow is forecast in eastern parts, where snow could fall at a rate of 1 inch per hour throughout Thursday afternoon. Other warnings are active for Oneida, Madison, Chenango and Otsego counties.

Across the state line in Pennsylvania, winter weather advisories are active for northern parts of the state, including Potter, Tioga, Lycoming and Sullivan counties, where as much as 3 to 4 inches are expected at higher elevations.

Elsewhere in Bradford, Susquehanna and Wayne counties, snow is forecast from early morning until 10 a.m., before rain falls in the late morning and afternoon. Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling.

There is one winter weather advisory active for Massachusetts in Berkshire County, where 2 to 8 inches of “wet snow” is likely. Snowfall could reach up to an inch per hour during the afternoon hours, with some Thanksgiving trips likely to be affected.

Moving to the Canadian border, Minnesota has a single winter weather advisory in effect for St. Louis County. This area is likely to see 2 to 4 inches of snow.

“Lake effect snow showers at Rainy Lake are expected to create conditions ranging from locally moderate snowfall with rapid reductions in visibility to dry weather just a few miles away,” the NWS advisory reads. “Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility and road conditions.”

Finally, two winter weather warnings are in effect in Alaska, one for Petersburg Borough and one for Hyder, where “a strengthening system moving in from the west will push warm air with a wintry mix north Wednesday afternoon.”

‘Wet and dense’ snow is expected before more cold air moves in, causing snow to become increasingly fluffy and drier.
