Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Arrests: 21 Pro-Palestinian Protesters

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade was disrupted by a group of pro-Palestinian protesters on Thursday.

New York City police said they arrested 21 people who briefly halted the annual event in Manhattan.

According to multiple news sources, protesters jumped the barricades at Fifth Avenue and West 55th Street around 9:30 a.m. local time, blocking a Ronald McDonald balloon. The group, carrying Palestinian flags and banners, sat down along the parade route and began chanting, “Free, Free Palestine!” One of the banners read: “Do not celebrate genocide! Arms embargo now.”

In videos posted online, onlookers in the crowd can be heard expressing their displeasure at the interruption, sometimes chanting, “USA! USA! USA!” Others reportedly booed the protesters and then cheered as police led them away.

The parade was ultimately delayed by about five minutes. According to WABC, charges are pending against the protesters.

This is the second year in a row that people protesting Israel’s war in Gaza have disrupted the parade. Last year, a total of 34 pro-Palestinian protesters were taken into custody.

Both times, the protesters blocked the Ronald McDonald balloon. Some media outlets have speculated that McDonald’s may have been targeted on both occasions because of its perceived support for Israel in the war. This perception has led to a boycott of the fast-food chain, and the company bought back all of its Israeli restaurants earlier this year after sales suffered.
