Amazon workers plan to strike between Black Friday and Cyber Monday in several countries, including the US

Amazon workers in more than two dozen countries, including the U.S., plan to strike during the busy pre-Christmas shopping days between Black Friday and Cyber Monday to “make Amazon pay,” strike organizers said Thursday.

The “days of resistance” are intended to “hold Amazon accountable for labor abuses, environmental degradation and threats to democracy,” organizers UNI Global Union and Progressive International said.

“No matter how much they spend to fight us, companies like Amazon cannot break the power of workers working together,” Christy Hoffman, secretary general of UNI Global Union, said in a statement shared with FOX Business. “In Germany, ver.di has been leading the charge for more than a decade, demanding the right to collective bargaining – a struggle that is resonating around the world. From India to the United States, from Britain to Canada: workers are rising up against corporate exploitation and intimidation. “Make Amazon Pay Day” is a powerful testament to our unity and momentum. No company – no matter how wealthy – can silence the cause of workers demanding justice.”

According to UNI Global Union, the striking workers will be supported by several unions, anti-poverty and garment worker rights groups and others.

In a statement to FOX Business, Amazon accused the organizers of being “intentionally misleading” and promoting a “false narrative.”

“The fact is, at Amazon we offer great rewards, great benefits and great opportunities – all from day one,” said Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards. “We have created more than 1.5 million jobs worldwide and counting. And we provide a modern, safe and engaging workplace, whether you work in an office or one of our corporate buildings.”

Organizers said this will be the fifth year of high-profile action against Amazon during the start of the holiday shopping season.

Specifically, UNI Global Union in New Delhi, India, said hundreds of Amazon workers “will unite to demand fair treatment in light of Amazon’s mistreatment of workers during a massive heat wave last summer in July.”

“(Jeff) Bezos’ company has spent countless millions to prevent workers from organizing, but the strikes and protests happening around the world show that workers’ desire for justice – for union representation – cannot be stopped.” , Hoffman claimed. “Together we demand that Amazon treat its workers fairly, respect fundamental rights, and stop undermining the systems designed to protect us all. ‘Make Amazon Pay Day’ will be a global act of resistance against Amazon’s abuse of power. “

It is not clear how many workers in the US and abroad plan to strike.
