Music fans have joked about their last-minute attempt to curate their style so they can look cool when their Spotify Wrapped list comes out.

Every year, the audio streaming giant provides insight into subscribers’ own music tastes, based on their most listened to songs, artists and genres. Spotify Wrapped also analyzes your data to compare it to broader listening trends.

It’s released in late November or December every year, and in the run-up to that, people joke about changing their listening style at the last minute to look cooler when Wrapped comes out.

Many Spotify subscribers talked about how they tried to hack the system in posts on X, formerly Twitter, by listening to certain songs over and over again.

“Imagine her hating me, a girl just sitting in her room trying to change the trajectory of her Spotify wrapping before it’s too late,” @jennifermerr wrote.

“That time of year I put certain songs on repeat to hack my Spotify wrap,” @marywana_ posted.

“Spotify Wrapped comes out in a week and all I’m worried about is which of the random songs I was hyper fixated on for two days and then completely abandoned will make my top 10,” wrote @Chiefkis .

Others joked that they didn’t have to worry about hacks because they were confident in their music taste.

“I have no reason to be ashamed of my Spotify wrap. I’ve loved everything I listened to this year so I’ll just have to accept my fate..” posted @lyricsyoumigh.

And @ju0nyah added: “I just realized Spotify Wrapped is coming soon… I have great taste in music so I don’t need any last minute changes.”

Bad news for the ‘hackers’

For people looking to change their Wrapped at the eleventh hour, the bad news is that Spotify only collects your listening data from January 1 to October 31, which means almost two months of people’s listening habits aren’t included.

Spotify explained the reason for this in a 2021 interview.

“The reason we have this hard limit is just for campaign logistics,” said Brendan Codey, associate director for Creator Growth and Programs at Spotify.

“We have to QA (quality assurance) the site and we have to finalize the assets for Wrapped, which all takes a while. You throw in Thanksgiving and we have even less time.”

When will Spotify Wrapped 2024 take place?

Spotify hasn’t announced the release date of the latest Spotify version, simply telling subscribers: “Your listening highlights and more. Keep playing what you love, and we’ll contact you when it’s ready.”

The 2023 Wrapped was released on November 29 and the 2022 on November 30. More than two years before that, Spotify dropped Wrapped in December, on December 5 and 6.
