Our picks for the Lone Star Showdown in College Station

The Lone Star Showdown is back.

For the first time since 2011, No. 20 Texas A&M (9-2) will host No. 3 Texas (10-1) on Saturday in College Station, with a spot in the SEC Championship on the line.

The last time these two teams faced off, the Longhorns escaped with a 27-25 win over the Aggies thanks to a game-winning field goal from Justin Tucker. Will Saturday’s matchup be as high-stakes as last time?

Columnists, writers and editors of The Dallas Morning News make their choice for this weekend’s match. Check out their predictions below.

Texas’ defense will overwhelm an A&M team that will suffer back-to-back losses for the first time this season. The Longhorns will overcome the hostile atmosphere of Kyle Field to set up a rematch with Georgia in the SEC championship game.

Longhorn’s offense remains troubled while Kyle Field’s 12th-man crowd has the desired effect. But Texas’ defense has the playmakers who can make a difference as Texas holds on to reach the SEC title game.

Buckle up, the blood rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M is back

Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns have experience winning in tough circumstances. Last year they defeated Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Michigan in Ann Arbor in September. The more than 100,000 fans at Kyle Field will present the toughest test for these Longhorns. Even with an injured ankle, Ewers should give the Longhorns enough of an offensive edge over his counterpart, A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, to lead Texas to a narrow road win.

Texas will take a decent lead in the first half after a buzzing offense led by Quinn Ewers, but things will get out of rhythm in the third quarter, allowing Texas A&M to get back into it. Longhorns linebacker David Gbenda said it himself this week: “A lot of people who don’t know the ball probably turned the Aggies off (after their early deficit against Auburn last Saturday), but I said, no, this is going to be a game.” Don’t be surprised if the same thing happens at Kyle Field.

The Longhorns can prove once and for all that they beat a good team in a tough environment if their defense plays as well as usual and Quinn Ewers rises to the level he has played at in places that are just as tough. Think Tuscaloosa. Texas’ top problems? With Marcel Reed, who blocks the sound and Ewers’ sensitive ankle. If he is even more limited than usual, it could give the Aggies the opening they need. In that case, the Aggies’ home court advantage is among the best in college football. Win this game and Texas will have earned its rematch against Georgia.

If Quinn Ewers’ ankle injury limits his mobility like it did against Kentucky, Arch Manning might have to save Texas in a hostile Kyle Field. Aggies redshirt freshman QB hurt Texas with his running ability, but the ballhawking Longhorns (17 interceptions) will force Reed into one mistake too many.
