3 Dead, 1 Seriously Injured in Tesla Cybertruck Crash in Northern California

PIEDMONT, Calif. (AP) — Three people were killed and one seriously injured early Wednesday when a Tesla Cybertruck crashed and caught fire in Northern California, officials said.

Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers said speed was likely a factor in the single-vehicle crash, but he added that authorities would continue to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy.

The occupants of the Cybertruck had returned from a “party” around 3:10 a.m. Wednesday, but Bowers declined to provide additional details. Someone who had also been at the party, but was driving a separate car, was able to pull the surviving victim from the Cybertruck.

The chief would not release identifying details of the victims, citing the family’s privacy.

Although the police officers who arrived on the scene were unable to extinguish the flames with their fire extinguishers, the fire brigade quickly extinguished the fire.

Piedmont Fire Chief Dave Brannigan said the speed at which the flames were extinguished meant it was unlikely the Cybertruck’s large lithium-ion battery had caught fire. He called the incident “more along the lines of a typical car fire.”

Bowers, answering a question about recent Cybertruck recalls, said, “There is no indication that mechanical effects were the primary cause of the collision.”

The Cyber Truckwhich has been on sale for about a year, has been recalled six times due to safety concerns, most recently on November 5 because a fault in an electrical inverter can cause the drive wheels to lose power.

Other recalls covered rear view camera images that do not activate immediately after shifting into reverse, trim pieces that can fall off, windshield wipers that can malfunction and incorrect font size on the warning lights on the instrument panel. The futuristic trucks were recalled in April to fix accelerator pedals that can get stuck in interior trim.

The city of Piedmont is located approximately 2.5 miles northeast of Oakland.
