Coach Brian Daboll, WR Darius Slayton

BRIAN DABOLL: I know we just put out a statement releasing Daniel (Quarterback) Daniel (Jones). I wish Daniel the best. He came by this morning, met with (President and Chief Executive Officer) Mr. (John) Mara and then, after consultation with John, with (Senior Vice President and General Manager) Joe (Schoen) and with Daniel (Jones), I felt this was best for Daniel. I gained a lot of respect for him. Like I said, a true professional and wish him all the best.

Q: We spoke to him yesterday. He was speaking in the past tense, so we all clearly felt that this was happening. But do you think there was any benefit to him staying, or do you think it was exactly the right move for everyone involved?

BRIAN DABOLL: I have a lot of respect for him. Again he came in and spoke to Mr. Mara, he had a good conversation. I had a chat with Daniel (Jones), a few of them today, good chats and wish him the best.

Q: Did you know Monday’s decision would lead to this?

BRIAN DABOLL: No, again, this was not an easy situation when things like this happen. He came in this morning and spoke to Mr. Mara. They had their discussion. We talked and thought it was best for him to be able to do that. He’s put a lot into it, he’s a great young man. It’s never easy.

Q: Do you think this is best for the team?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, we had good conversations. They remain private. He is nothing but a professional and we have to get ready to play here.

Q: Have you had the opportunity to talk to the team about this at this point, the fact that he was going to be released?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yes, I did. I did that right before we got a little walkthrough. I let them know. I wanted them to hear it and then of course make a statement.

Q: I think the alternative would have been sending him home, like the Derek Carr thing. Why release him for that? How did you come to that conclusion? Because he can obviously sign with another team…

BRIAN DABOLL: I’m not going to go into all the specifics. He’s been a professional. It’s never an easy situation. He asked for this and I just thought where we were and that to play or not to play was the right decision for him.

Q: How did the team take the news?

BRIAN DABOLL: It was a small conversation, a few minutes. Again, this is not an easy matter. You’re around people every day for long periods of time, whether it’s years for some people or months for other people. You have a lot of respect for your teammates, but we have to get ready to go.

Q: How do you keep your team focused when this happens?

BRIAN DABOLL: I think they did a great job. They had a good breakdown, good conversation. I think they are focused. They’re ready to go. We need a good day today to play our best game.

Q: So, do you only have the two quarterbacks on Sunday? (Quarterback) Tim Boyle, would you like to bring him up?

BRIAN DABOLL: There are discussions here that we’ll have after training. We decide what is best for the team.

Q: In regards to (running back Tyrone) Tracy (Jr.). How did you approach that from the last game? And how did he handle it? Even if you haven’t played a game yet, but he was clearly distraught after the game.

BRIAN DABOLL: Really good young player. Cares a lot about his teammates, cares a lot about his job. He’s really improved since he’s been here. It’s made of the right kind of material. He works hard on it in practice. We have consciously made sure that we do good work in that area. But he’s been a productive player for us. He has the right mentality.

Q: Just to move on quickly and not give up on conversations, which I know you don’t do, but how did you handle that with him in the immediate aftermath of that? Want to be in the locker room after the match in Germany and then continue? It is clear that he has determined a large part of your success.

BRIAN DABOLL: Just like one of your children. Tell him you believe in him. (Running Backs Coach) Joel Thomas has done a great job with him. You work on the things you need to work on. But I have a strong belief in (Tyrone) Tracy, as do a lot of the other young players we have here. He does things the right way. He cares. It’s good to see a man care so much. So I’m glad he’s on our team.

Q: What was your reaction when Daniel (Jones) asked for this this morning? Did he talk to you?

BRIAN DABOLL: Again, I’ll save my responses… We had a very good conversation, Daniel (Jones) and I. I gained a lot of respect for him. Again, not the way we wanted it to go by any means, but he’s been nothing but a professional since I’ve been here with him. He’s a great young man.

Question: Why don’t we come to this resolution earlier this week? Why did it take four or five days?

BRIAN DABOLL: Sometimes it takes a little longer. You never know how it would turn out. It just happened today that he came in to talk to Mr. Mara. So I won’t go into details and things like that. He continues. I wish him the best and we have to get ready to play.

Question: The reason I say that is… Have you guys thought about this being a possibility, or was this his kind of request: “Hey, for me it’s better that we go this way”?

BRIAN DABOLL: He went in, spoke to John and asked for his release.

Q: You’ve talked here about the disappointment of Daniel’s (Jones) era. As someone with a good track record against quarterbacks, do you feel a sense of disappointment that you couldn’t make it work with him?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, absolutely. We talked about that on Monday. Naturally. You do everything you can do, and I’m disappointed it didn’t work out. Again, I have a lot of respect for him and the way he went about his business. But of course.

Q: (Quarterback) Tommy (DeVito) talked at length on Wednesday about how this time he wants to eliminate some of the sideshow stuff from last year and just told his people it’s all football. I guess you like to hear that, but how much do you think that can help?

BRIAN DABOLL: He put a lot into it. From year one to year two you hope that you take a big step in your preparation and all the things that have happened. He’s from the area and this is what happened last year. I think he dialed in well. He’s really focused on the things he needs to do and that’s a credit to him as a second-year player.
