College football experts question leadership in final minutes of Georgia’s comeback win against Georgia Tech

Friday night saw one of the greatest rivalry games of all time at Sanford Stadium. Georgia came all the way back and stalled Georgia Tech in the annual Clean old fashioned hate game in 8OT – but it wasn’t without some controversy.

Before the Bulldogs scored the tying touchdown in the fourth quarter, Carson Beck threw an incomplete pass intended for Arian Smith. As he threw the ball, it appeared one of the offensive linemen had gotten a hold of a defender’s jersey, which some college football experts said warranted a holding penalty.

However, the referees did not throw the flag. Two plays later, Georgia scored to tie the game and ultimately force overtime.

However, that wasn’t the only time the officiating was questioned. There was an earlier play that helped Georgia get inside the 10-yard line Dominic Lovet drew a pass interference flag. Although it might not necessarily have been clear.

Another key play came in the fourth quarter and set up Georgia’s final scoring drive. Then Jackson achieved a big hit Haynes King and forced a fumble, giving the Bulldogs the ball back just before the two-minute timeout. As he went for the ball he appeared to lower his head, leading to questions about whether this warranted a targeting assessment.

The officials went to the monitor, but that was to confirm UGA had possession of the ball and to check the time on the clock. No targeting review was called and the Bulldogs went down to score a crucial touchdown.

It took eight overtimes, but Georgia eventually held on and secured the 44-42 victory over its domestic rival. In the final overtime period, UGA kept Georgia Tech out of the end zone Nate Frazier managed to seal it – finally. The Bulldogs now have an easier path to the College Football Playoff and he can earn a first-round bye against either in next week’s SEC Championship Texas or Texas A&M.
