Knights lose 2024 football finals to Utes

play

ORLANDO — It’s over.

UCF’s 2024 season came to a sad end on Black Friday at FBC Mortgage Stadium.

The visiting Utah Utes snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 28-14 win, handing the Knights their eighth loss in nine games.

UCF fell to 4-8. Utah improved to 5-7.

One highlight of the Knights’ Senior Night: RJ Harvey broke the school’s touchdown record. He surpassed Kevin Smith with his 47th career score, a 5-yard run in the second quarter. Harvey added another in the final minute on a 6-yard catch for EJ Colson’s first career touchdown pass.

The Utes, despite leading 379-196, held a 13-7 lead at halftime and scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.

UCF Football Highlights vs. Utah

After a failed UCF onside kick, the Utes take a knee and kill the clock. Both teams are ready for next season.

The Knights find the end zone with 19 seconds left. Colson slings a pass over the middle to RJ Harvey for six yards and six points.

Utah leads 28-14.

It gets uglier.

Utah goes up 28-7 with 3:34 left. EJ Colson fires over the middle and is cleared by Smith Snowden. Snowden trots into the end zone from 45 feet out.

Gus Malzahn made a quarterback switch in the fourth quarter, turning to true freshman EJ Colson. But Utah’s blitz packages continue to destroy the Knights’ offensive game plan.

Karene Reid sacked Colson on fourth down to give the Utes the ball back with a 21-7 lead and just 4:17 left on the clock.

RJ Harvey has 119 rushing yards, his ninth game passing the mark this season. He has the Knights’ lone touchdown, his 24th of the season and record-breaking 47th of his career.

Landen King hauled in a 15-yard touchdown catch from Luke Bottari, padding Utah’s lead over UCF to 21-7 with 14:46 to play.

Prior to the touchdown, Utah was 1 of 9 on third-down conversion attempts.

UCF outscored Utah 225-172, but gave up 10 points after two turnovers.

Mitch McCarthy punts to the Utah 2-yard line with 12 seconds left, and Luke Bottari pushes the pile a few yards up the middle on a QB keeper to set up the halftime play.

UCF Trails 13-7. The Utes get the kickoff for the second half.

Cole Becker kicked his second field goal of the night, a 24-yarder, to increase Utah’s lead over UCF to 13-7 with 1:17 left in the half.

Zacharyus Williams provided the big offensive play of the drive, a 33-yard reception on a play-action fake by quarterback Luke Bottari. Micah Bernard is up to 56 rushing yards on 10 attempts for the Utes.

There it is.

With a five-yard run, RJ Harvey scores the 47th touchdown of his UCF career. That gives the running back the program record previously held by Kevin Smith.

The Knights cut their deficit to 10-7 with 3:25 left in the first half.

While both offenses are struggling, Utah is increasing its lead with its defense.

UCF’s Dylan Rizk makes a third down throw and it ends up in the arms of Zemaiah Vaughn. Vaughn sprints him 60 yards back to the house.

The Utes have a 10-0 lead with 7:45 left in the second quarter.

Cole Becker made a 37-yard field goal to put Utah ahead 3-0 over UCF with 6:52 left in the first quarter.

The Utes were flagged for a false start before fourth-and-inches from inside the UCF 14-yard line. Zacharyus Williams provided the big win on the opening drive with a 17-yard jet sweep.

A promising opening drive ended in disaster for UCF.

Lander Barton picked off Dylan Rizk on a blitz, and Logan Fano recovered the fumble at the Knights’ 46-yard line. Prior to the turnover, Rizk connected on 2 of 4 passes for 24 yards, and RJ Harvey gained 16 yards on three carries.

The Knights remain without injured defensive backs Braeden Marshall and Antione Jackson. This will be Marshall’s third straight absence and Jackson’s second.

Defensive end Malachi Lawrence also donned street clothes during warmups. He played five times against West Virginia last week, but they were productive. Pro Football Focus gave him three pressures and a strip sack.

Less than 45 minutes until kick-off, the temperature in the Bounce House is 60 degrees. According to the National Weather Service, it looks mostly cloudy the rest of the evening with a low near 50. North wind around 10 mph.

UCF vs. Utah History

This is the first meeting between UCF and Utah.

Chris Boyle, Daytona Beach News-Journal: UCF 24, Utah 21

“It’s a matchup that pits UCF’s fourth-string quarterback (Dylan Rizk) against Utah’s fifth-stringer (Luke Bottari). Bottari took over for Isaac Wilson late in the third quarter of Saturday’s loss to Iowa State when the latter had a left knee injury, RJ Harvey will produce a few more lasting memories in his final Knights game, breaking the school’s all-time record for total touchdowns and giving UCF just enough of an edge to win this bowl ineligible. fight.”

Chris Vinel, Daytona Beach News-Journal: UCF 28, Utah 21

This season has been more of a knightmare than a fairy tale for UCF, but it should end on a high note. Utah has scored 28 points just once since September 14 – last week against Iowa State. One of their four touchdowns came on a punt return, and the first two scoring drives were led by Wilson before he was injured.

BetMGM rules and odds from Wednesday:

  • Spread: UCF (-9½)
  • Top/bottom: 47½ points
  • Moneyline: Utah +280, UCF -350
