Maine tops UNH on the road, 3-1

DURHAM, NH – The #5/6 University of Maine men’s ice hockey team earned a 3-1 road victory over rival New Hampshire on Friday night at the Whittemore Center.

The Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle was scoreless after the first period before UNH took a 1-0 lead at 7:17 and scored a 5-on-3 power play goal.

Lynden Breen got the Black Bears on the board three minutes later and after that Owen Fowler doubled the lead three minutes later. The Black Bears withstood the Wildcats’ late attack and Frank Djurasevic sealed the 3-1 victory with a short-handed goal and an empty net.

  • Maine had a 34-25 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Black Bears went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Wildcats went 1-for-5.
  • Albin Boija made 24 saves in moving to 8-2-2 on the year.
  • The Black Bears are now 73-64-13 in the all-time series with UNH.
  • The win was Maine’s first at the Whittemore Center since Feb. 2, 2019, snapping a seven-game winless streak.
  • Lynden Breen scored his second goal of the season…he added an assist for a two-point play.
  • Owen Fowler scored his fourth goal and also added an assist for a multi-point effort.
  • Breen had nine faceoff wins in the game.
