Nets’ Ben Simmons can’t wait to soak up the hate from 76ers fans again

PHILADELPHIA – They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Except for a 76er fan booing Ben Simmons.

Brooklyn’s Simmons has a history in Philadelphia, and while he has returned to Wells Fargo Center before, he knows full well he will be booed by 76ers fans for the rest of his career.

But he’s not afraid of it.

He feeds on it.

“Yeah, I love that too,” said Simmons, who leads his Nets back to Philadelphia tonight. “I love being in arenas where it’s loud and people are cheering and stuff. So it’s part of the game. It’s part of it. And I love it.”

Simmons played 275 games in six years for the Sixers, missing his rookie season due to injury and 2021-2022 due to mental health and back problems.

His detachment, his hesitation to drive and his eventual procrastination made him persona non grata.

One fan paraded around town with a sign that read “F–k Ben Simmons” — while he was still on the roster.

His divorce from the 76ers was ugly, and Simmons has been the subject of hatred among their fans since he was dealt to the Nets for James Harden.

“There’s only so much booing you can do,” Simmons shrugged.

This will be Simmons’ fourth time playing at Wells Fargo Center since being traded to the Nets.

He also missed one of their visits last season and their March 10 visit just weeks after his arrival.

But Wells Fargo Center had to increase security on that first return — even though he was injured and not playing — and he’s aware that Philadelphia fans have elevated the cheering to an art form.

“For sure. That’s what Philly is about, you know? Shoot, when I was in Philly, we got booed when we weren’t playing well. So it goes both ways,” said Simmons. “But they’re passionate fans .And that’s why the city of Philly is so great and the fans are so great.”

Simmons clearly got fired up in the win over Charlotte with his clash with Hornets star Brandon Miller.

He’ll draw inspiration from the bile that’s sure to come into the Wells Fargo Center.

“I really hope so because it’s just cool,” Cam Johnson said. “Take a step back and look at it. And I think that’s the great thing about being an athlete: that people really care. They may care about you, they may hate you or whatever, but the bottom line is that they care.

“They have someone they support, they have something they cheer for, and that’s what makes our league and every other professional league and sport in general exist. So it’s just something you have to embrace. I hope he embraces it. Philly is always a bit crazy and rowdy. They have a lot to say. You know, when Ben comes into town, they sure have a lot to say. But I just hope that it gives our team energy and that we can feed off that.”

There will certainly be tons of negative energy directed at Simmons, if the Nets can turn that into positive energy to feed off and rally around their point forward.

“Yes, that’s what you have to do as a competitor,” Brooklyn center Nic Claxton said. ‘If people call you names, they don’t do that to people they don’t care about. So you are relevant. So you’re on their minds. You can see it as a good thing.”
