Thornton holds court at City Hall

Joe Thornton called it Joe Thornton Weekend, not Joe Thornton Day.

And who can argue with the ever-smiling, larger-than-life San Jose Sharks legend, whose No. 19 jersey will be retired Saturday at SAP Center?

Thornton spoke Thursday afternoon at San Jose City Hall after Mayor Matt Mahan officially declared Nov. 23 as Joe Thornton Day. It is Jumbo’s only media presence this weekend.

He discussed a wide range of topics, from rising to the rooftops alongside Patrick Marleau, whether he will ever take an official position with the San Jose Sharks, and whether he hopes to score four goals in Friday’s Legends Game.

Opening statement from San Jose Sharks legend:

Joe Thornton Day in San Jose…sounds pretty good, huh?

Jonathan Becher, thank you very much for your kind words. You know how much the city of San Jose means to me and my family who live here. It’s important that the city has a winning team, and I know you and the Sharks management team are back on the right track.
