The highly anticipated movie musical “Wicked” achieved a record-breaking worldwide debut of $164 million in its opening weekend, according to NBC.

Released on November 22, the adaptation of the hit Broadway musical set a new record for the biggest domestic debut of a film based on a stage production.

The film, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has already received a lot of attention from fans and critics alike, allowing it to defy both “gravity and box office expectations,” according to NBC in a statement.

When will ‘Wicked’ be available for streaming?

Following its theatrical run, “Wicked” will stream on Peacock, although NBC has not announced a release date for the streaming premiere. Historically, Universal Pictures releases have moved to Peacock between 45 and 120 days after their theatrical debut, according to People.

‘Wicked’ tells the backstory of Elphaba and Glinda, the witches of Oz, before the events of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The film is the first part of a two-part film adaptation, with the sequel expected to follow in 2025.
