Referee Nick Mahrley suffers concussion from broken bat

NEW YORK — Umpire Nick Mahrley was thrown out in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game between the New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies when he was struck in the neck by a broken bat from Giancarlo Stanton.

Stanton’s bat broke as he hit a bloop single to left field. The barrel struck Mahrley in the left side of his mask, knocking it off.

Mahrley immediately fell and was treated by the New York athletic training staff. A medic came onto the field and Mahrley was helped onto a stretcher as the crowd applauded.

After New York’s 10-3 win, Major League Baseball reported that Mahrley suffered a concussion and would not play his next series.

“We’re all hoping for the best with Nick and we’ll see what happens,” Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said. “They’re tough out there, man. It’s not easy, you’ve got both benches yelling at you the whole game about balls and strikes. You’ve got to make split-second decisions.

“You’ve got players angry at you, you’re trying to do your best and then you get hit on the side of the head with the bat, that’s tough. It wasn’t easy to see him get taken away but I just hoped for the best.”

When play resumed, crew chief Marvin Hudson took over behind the plate. Second base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt moved from second base to first base.

Mahrley, 41, played 473 games as a referee before becoming a full-time referee last season.
