Home plate umpire Nick Mahrley was carried off the field on a stretcher after being hit in the head with a broken bat during the fifth inning of Sunday’s game between the home New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies.

In the fifth inning, Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton’s bat broke just above his hands when he hit a single to left field against Rockies pitcher Austin Gomber.
The broken barrel of the bat struck Mahrley’s face mask and the umpire dropped to one knee.

Medical personnel quickly rushed onto the field to treat Mahrley.

The 41-year-old appeared conscious as he spoke to medical personnel behind home plate. The umpire remained on one knee as a brace was placed around his neck.

After 16 minutes, Mahrley was placed on a stretcher and driven off the field in a van as the Bronx crowd thanked him heartily.

“Nick is being evaluated by the Yankees medical staff and is currently undergoing a battery of tests,” a Major League Baseball official said.

According to a source familiar with the situation, the referee has been diagnosed with a concussion and will undergo additional tests in the coming days. Mahrley will be out of action for at least part of next week, he added.

The Rockies posted on X: “Sending our best wishes to umpire Nick Mahrley.”

Crew chief Marvin Hudson took over at the plate with the Yankees leading 4-3 and the bases loaded with one out. Umpires Hunter Wendelstedt and John Tumpane handled the rest of the plate duties. The Yankees won the game 10-3 on two home runs by Aaron Judge.

Marley has been a full-time Major League umpire since the 2023 season, after working in the Minor Leagues since 2007 and working 473 Major League games.
