Alabama High School QB Dies After Brain Injury During Game

An Alabama high school senior died this weekend after suffering a brain injury on opening night of his football season, leaving his community and family in mourning.

Caden Tellier, who was 16 years old, according to local outlet WFSA, was playing for the Morgan Academy football team in their first game against Southern Academy on Friday when he “suffered a traumatic brain injury,” according to GoFundMe and Facebook posts shared by the school itself and the Alabama Independent School Association.

According to school principal Dr. Bryan Oliver, according to AL.com, the student-athlete was injured after a tackle during the third quarter of the game in Selma, Alabama.

According to ABC News, the high school player was taken from the field on Friday and taken to a local hospital before his death was announced the next day. The Selma Times-Journal described the scene as a “terrifying moment” when the teenager was injured, as the match was postponed while he was treated and taken away in an ambulance.

Tellier’s parents later shared a statement on social media, according to AL.com, saying their son “met Jesus in person.”

“We appreciate all of your prayers and we yearn for them for the difficult days ahead,” the statement said. “All who know Caden have known kindness, generosity and love, and true to his nature, he is giving of himself once more.”

“Lives were touched by the way he lived and now lives will be saved by his passing,” the family added. “We will walk beside him in his earthly body in the days ahead, knowing his spirit is rejoicing in heaven.”

Tellier’s GoFundMe organizer Kristen Jones shared a similar sentiment in the description of the campaign, which has raised $76,000 of a current goal of $100,000 as of Monday morning. Jones also noted that Tellier was an organ donor.

“True to his nature, he is giving himself once more to save the lives of others by donating his organs,” the message read. “His legacy will live on and we thank God that we had the opportunity to love him and be loved by him.”

“One way we can support the Tellier family as they grieve this tragedy is by covering all of their many medical expenses, life flights, funeral expenses, and time off from work,” Jones added. “Thank you for your love for this family as they navigate this difficult path. Live like Caden.”

On Facebook over the weekend, Oliver shared a message with the school community, calling the quarterback a “shining light” who “graced the halls of Morgan Academy.”

He added that there are “no words to describe” how the school community and the Tellier family felt. “We will come together and support Jamie, Arsella and Lyla with all our hearts,” he wrote. “We also extend our deepest condolences to the extended Tellier family… Caden will never be forgotten for who he was and what he means to Morgan Academy.”

Michael McLendon, executive director of the Alabama Independent School Association, wrote in an additional statement on social media that school activities have been suspended for the week to allow the community time to “come together, reflect and support each other during this heartbreaking time.”

AISA also offered the school “all possible support and resources.”
