‘Heartbreaking’ Mariah Carey says her mother and sister died on the same day

Mariah Carey announced with a broken heart on Monday that her mother Patricia passed away over the weekend.

In a “tragic turn of events,” the singer said, her sister, Alison, died the same day. The 55-year-old star did not provide details about the circumstances of either death.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed,” Carey said in a statement. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Carey had a complicated relationship with her family, which she wrote about extensively in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

Her mother, a former opera singer, was mentioned on the book’s dedication page.

“And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I believe, did the best she could,” Carey wrote. “I will always love you the best I can.”

Carey told Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2020 that the book isn’t about fame, but about “empowering” the little girl she was. She added that she didn’t agree with everything her mother did in her life, but that she loved her.

“I feel like it’s a survivor’s story, and not everyone realized that about me,” Carey said.

In the memoir, Carey explained that she was raised primarily by her mother after her parents divorced when she was 3. E! News reported that Carey wrote in her book that she and her mother became close through a shared love of art, but that the two had difficult times.

She recounted a time when she was 14 and giggled as her mother sang Michael Jackson in an operatic tone, and an angry Patricia Carey told her, “You just have to hope that one day you’ll be half the singer I am.”

“When people you love are jealous of you professionally, that’s part of success. But when that person is your mother and the jealousy comes at such a young age, it hurts even more,” Carey wrote.

The “Fantasy” singer also described heartbreaking moments with her older siblings, Morgan and Alison, in the book. Both of Carey’s siblings filed defamation lawsuits against her.

Her sister, according to E! News, filed a defamation lawsuit over Carey’s allegations that her brother subjected her to several traumatic events when she was young, including sedating her. Her sister denied the allegations in the book.

“My sister gave me Valium, gave me a pinky nail full of cocaine, gave me third-degree burns and tried to sell me to a pimp,” Carey alleged in the book, according to the outlet.

The lawsuit alleged that Alison “has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression as a result of the memoir,” E! reported.

NBC News found a subpoena in New York with the details in the E! News story, but no additional information on the status of that lawsuit could be found. New York Supreme Court records show that the defamation lawsuit filed by Carey’s brother is still active in court.
