Mariah Carey’s mother and sister tragically die on the same day: ‘My heart is broken’

Mariah Carey announced that her mother Patricia and sister Alison tragically passed away last weekend.

“I am heartbroken that I lost my mother this past weekend,” Mariah, 55, said in a statement shared with People on Monday. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

Although the Grammy winner did not disclose either cause of death, she was able to spend time with her 87-year-old mother before passing away.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed,” she added. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

It is unclear when she last saw Alison, who was 63 when she died.

Patricia shared Mariah, Alison and son Morgan with ex-husband Alfred Roy Carey. The exes married in 1960 and split when the “Obsessed” singer was 3.

Mariah inherited her singing talents from her mother, an opera singer and vocal coach who trained at Juilliard University.

However, the mother-daughter duo had a very complex relationship, which Mariah once described as “a prickly cord of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”

Alison and Patricia died “on the same day,” Mariah revealed.

The legendary singer spoke candidly about the couple’s relationship in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It has never just been black and white — it has been a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote.

Despite their ups and downs, the “Hero” singer dedicated part of her memoir to her mother.

“And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I believe, actually did the best she could,” she wrote. “I will always love you the best I can.”

Although Mariah and her mother were able to maintain a relationship, the singer admitted that she had no contact with her siblings at the time of the book’s publication.

She explained that it was “emotionally and physically safer for her not to have contact” with Alison or Morgan.

In the book, the “We Belong Together” singer wrote extensively about her tumultuous childhood, detailing several alleged incidents of abuse by her siblings.

In one chapter, Mariah claims that when she was 12 years old, her then 20-year-old sister drugged her with Valium, “offered (her) a pinky nail full of cocaine, gave (her) third-degree burns and tried to sell me to a pimp.”

She also claimed that her siblings and mother started treating her like “an ATM in a wig” after she became famous.

Alison and Morgan later sued Mariah for “intentional emotional harm” and defamation, respectively.

Alison also sued her mother in 2020 over allegations of child abuse.
