New York Yankees News: Fans Beg Juan Soto to Stay

New York Post | Andrew Crane: After witnessing more magic from Juan Soto and Aaron Judge on Sunday, the Yankee Stadium crowd serenaded Soto with chants as the right fielder took the field. “Sign Soto back on” is what they implored, or perhaps it was “please stay, Soto.” Whatever the exact phrase, Soto and Judge seemed amused, and Soto acknowledged the fans’ cries. After the game, Soto told the media, “I don’t know. They’ve got to talk to Cashman.” Indeed, it will be up to Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner to get the job done come winter.

MLB.com | Mike Lupica: It may be hard to remember this moment, but Aaron Judge was surprisingly ordinary for the first month of the season. The 100 games he’s played since then are as good as any in baseball history. The only players to hit 45 home runs and drive in 100 runs in a 100-game season span are Judge in 2024 and Barry Bonds in 2001. Judge has also posted an on-base percentage above .500 during that span without being intentionally cut loose like Bonds was in his prime.

The Athletic | Brendan Kuty: ($) Judge is on a roll, and we’ll tell our grandkids about it someday. Some wonder if there’s really a limit to what he can do, including breaking the single-season home run record of 73 set by Barry Bonds. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, “I’m not going to put a limit on what Aaron Judge can do,” while Soto and Giancarlo Stanton flatly responded that they thought Judge could do it.

While 73 is clearly unlikely this year (or any year), the exploits of the recently named AL Player of the Week make the impossible seem plausible. Considering that he put together his historic seasons during years when MLB’s ball was seemingly deader, it’s easy to wonder whether Judge could actually challenge Bonds’ record if his best seasons coincided with seasons when MLB played with a live ball.

In a minor roster move that Jeff handled, the Yankees also acquired Triple-A outfielder Duke Ellis. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, they placed reliever Ian Hamilton on the 60-day IL. Note that Hamilton is already on a rehab assignment and has been out for 60 days, so this is procedural.
