Wednesday will be scorching hot in the Big Apple, with temperatures rising into the mid-30s. Thunderstorms are expected afterward, bringing with them a cold front.

According to Fox Weather meteorologist Jordan Overton, temperatures in New York City are expected to reach 93 degrees Fahrenheit, but humidity will push the heat index to around 100 degrees Fahrenheit at the hottest part of the day.

A heat warning is in effect for the Big Apple from 11am, with a 30% chance of rain and thunderstorms from 2pm.

Wednesday marks the fifth day so far in August with temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius, following a three-day stretch of horrendous temperatures at the start of the month, Overton said.

“It’s not as unusual as people think. August is very close to the hottest month in New York City, which is technically July,” he explained of the string of super-hot days.

“It’s just around average.”

Temperatures are rising as the US Open gets underway this week at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens.

Organizers said Monday that this year’s Grand Slam tournament is expected to attract a record 1 million spectators.

Meanwhile, parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania between Trenton and Philadelphia are under an even stricter extreme heat warning, with heat index readings as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit, the National Weather Service said.

Residents are advised to avoid excessive outdoor activities, drink plenty of fluids and stay in the shade or air-conditioned areas as much as possible.

The intense heat has already forced the Metuchen School District in Middlesex County, New Jersey, to announce an early closure for the first day of school on Wednesday, NJ.com reported.

Heat warnings remain in effect until 8 p.m., after which thunderstorms are expected, bringing a cold front.

There won’t be many storms, but when storms do develop they could be strong to severe, with the potential for wind gusts in excess of 50 mph and large hail.

Fortunately, New Yorkers only have to persevere on Wednesday, because the storm and the cold front in the evening will bring temperatures down even further, with temperatures expected to be around 26 degrees on Thursday.
