Family of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau speaks out after hockey players’ deaths

The family of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau released a statement about their heartbreaking deaths, just one day after the two were killed by a suspected drunk driver.

“Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and brothers-in-law, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends, but truly two wonderful people,” read the statement shared on behalf of the family by their uncle Jim.

“We want to let everyone know that we receive your messages of love and support and appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers,” the post continued.

“We ask for your continued respect and privacy during this very difficult time of mourning.”

The statement was signed by the Gaudreau family and the families of their loved ones.

Johnny, who played in the NHL for the Columbus Blue Jackets, is survived by his wife, Meredith Gaudreau, and their children Noa, 1, and Johnny, 6 months.

Matthew married Madeline Gaudreau in 2021 and according to an online registry, they are expecting their first child in December.

Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were fatally struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee while they were riding bicycles shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday.

The brothers were back in their native New Jersey for their sister Katie’s wedding, which was scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Friday. It has since been canceled.

Both Johnny and Matthew were reportedly groomsmen for Katie’s fiancé, Devin Joyce.

It appears the brothers went for a bike ride shortly after rehearsal on Thursday.

However, police say 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins struck the two while attempting to pass a slow-moving vehicle in front of him, which reportedly veered into the middle of the road to safely pass the brothers.

As Higgins attempted to pass the SUV on the right, he hit Matthew and Johnny from behind.

Police allege they detected a “strong odor of alcohol” on Higgins’ breath and that he reportedly failed a field sobriety test. He also admitted to drinking five or six beers that night, police said.

Higgins was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter.
