JPMorgan Chase customers withdraw money from ATMs using so-called ‘malfunction’ at bank – and immediately regret it

An illegal method of withdrawing money from JPMorgan Chase ATMs is going viral.

Posts and videos are circulating on social media about an alleged “malfunction” that appears to involve depositing counterfeit checks into the bank’s ATMs.

Once a counterfeit check is deposited, customers withdraw a portion of the funds, which are automatically credited to their accounts.

While the scheme does make money, it is essentially check fraud, and Chase is already causing negative account balances for those who attempt it.

ATM check fraud is not new. Anyone caught can be prosecuted and charged with bank fraud, wire fraud, and other related crimes.

ATM software is some of the most thoroughly tested code in the world. Although rare, actual failures can occur in the ATM.

In November last year, customers of NatWest bank in London rushed to an ATM that dispensed more money than requested.

And in August last year, a glitch allowed Bank of Ireland customers to withdraw up to €1,000 from ATMs across the country, even if they had little or no money in their accounts.
