Following high winds and stormy weather over the Labor Day weekend, an extreme heat warning was expected for the Phoenix area by midweek, with temperatures possibly exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit, the National Weather Service said.

Labor Day weather is expected to shift to a much quieter pattern as drier air settles over the valley, hampering any storm activity, the weather service in Phoenix said. Afternoon high temperatures are expected to reach 109 degrees in the Phoenix area.

“I wish you a safe holiday and remember to drink plenty of fluids if you go out partying today,” the weather service advises.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise above normal over the coming days, with extremely warm conditions expected by mid to late week.

The weather service has issued an extreme heat warning for central and southeastern Arizona, expected to last from Wednesday through Friday. High temperatures in some parts of the valley are expected to reach 115 degrees in the second half of the week.

“Temperatures of this magnitude in early September will cause HeatRisk levels to rise to the ‘high’ to ‘locally extreme’ category,” the weather service said. “The majority of the population is at risk for heat-related illness if proper heat precautions are not taken.”

Residents were advised to avoid going outside between 10am and 6pm, stay in an air-conditioned room, not rely solely on fans, wear light clothing, drink plenty of fluids, and take extra precautions around people or animals susceptible to heat stress.

Temperatures are expected to cool down slightly over the coming weekend, but afternoon temperatures are still likely to be around 43 degrees Celsius.
